Fact Family Puzzles

We are learning about FACT FAMILIES in my class.  I created this cute little puzzles to help reinforce the skills that we are learning.  These will be going in baggies in my math centers.  Each baggie will have 4 houses with fact family number on them with the matching 16 clouds.  The kids will have to sort the clouds onto the correct house.  Each house will have 2 addition and 2 subtraction clouds on it.  You can find it here...Fact-Family-Puzzles-Addition-and-Subtraction-Common-Core-10A3.

The Leprechaun Trap

I came home from my 3rd and final day of conferences that I have had during the past two weeks. I was so happy to see a book the I ordered sitting on the counter.  I had to sit down and read it right away.  Who doesn't get super excited about reading brand new children's books?  This one is called The Leprechaun Trap.  Ohmigosh!!!  It is the cutest book ever!!!  I can't even wait to bring it to my class and read it to my first graders on Friday.  If you had an Elf On The Shelf this winter and enjoyed moving him around and doing creative, messy tricks with him, you will LOVE this book.  It's has exactly the same concept....only the Leprechaun does tricks every night in March until St. Patrick's Day.  On the eve of St. Patrick's Day the kids make traps and trap to try to catch him on St. Patrick's Day.   Then they will get his gold and he won't make messes the next year.

After the first night of having the Elf in our house, I wondered whose idea it was for him to join our family!?!  I didn't feel like I was creative enough to hide him every night and after the first few days, I dreaded having to wait up at night and move him.  By Christmas time I was sad that he had to go away.  I am already thinking of fun things to do with the Leprechaun and can't wait for my class to come in every morning to find him.

You can find the book at clicking below....
You will find a letter to parents on building Leprechaun traps in my St. Patrick's Day Pack.
I can't wait to see my kids excited faces! :)

St. Patrick's Day Pack

I can't believe we are already starting our last week in February and March 1st will be here on Friday!  I can't believe that spring will be here before we know it.  I also can't believe that I have gotten my St. Patrick's Day Pack done BEFORE March has even started.  It is loaded with skills that our first graders need to know.  In my pack, you will find a letter to parents asking them to help their child build a Leprechaun trap.  There is a recipe for Shamrock Shakes.  There are lots of literacy center activities, math activities and writing activities.  Pictured below are some of the samples included in the pack.  You can find it here....St-Patricks-Day-Literacy-and-Math-Centers-More

You will find a letter to parents inviting them to help their child build a Leprechaun Trap.  Some pictures are included to show examples from my kiddos last year.

There is a mini book.  Some pages have pictures and some the kids will be able to draw pictures.  It has lots of facts included to tell about St. Patrick's Day.

Children will be able to match analog and digital clocks with each other matching times to the hour and half hour.  4 worksheets are included to go along with this.

In this activity students will solve addition equations.  They will solve addition equations and match the coins to the answer on the pots.  An addition facts sheet can be completed after.

Who doesn't love Lucky Charms?  With tis activity, you will give your kids each a baggie with cereal in it.  They will complete the graphs based on the number of each marshmallow they have.

In this activity, students will sort words that have a ch, sh, wh or th in them.  They will record the words on the worksheet provided.

In this activity, students will look at words with the "R" sound.  They will notice that ir, ur, er, or ear sometimes makes the "r" sound.  They will sort this words and record 5 of each one on the recording sheet.

Child will sort words into piles of singular or plural nouns.   They will record them on the recording sheet.

Students will learn about contractions in this activity.  They will put puzzles together with two words and it's contraction word.

In this activity, students will learn about future, present and past tense words. They will sort sentences into the correct columns. After sorting, they will do a worksheet.

In these puzzles students will make compound words.  They will put two words together to make a compound word.

In this activity, students will match shamrock pairs with words that mean the same thing.  They will complete the worksheet after.

Students will put pairs of words together that mean the opposite of each other.  A worksheet is included.

We will end the day by making Shamrock Shakes.

This activity is always one of my favorites.  I put each child's name on a piece of paper.  Each child has to draw a name.  They have to look at the name and write about why that person is a good friend or why we are lucky to have them in our class.

President's Day

Wow...these past two weeks have been a whirl wind.  We celebrated the 100th day, Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day, Clifford's 50th birthday and now are learning about President's Day.  We did a fun art project that I thought I would share today, in case you are learning about the Presidents too.  We read a story about Barack Obama today and wrote what our hope for the future was.  We then did these cute art projects.  You can find it here...BarackObama-Lesson.pdf.  Enjoy!

Chinese New Year

Being that Monday was the 100th Day of School, we had to wait until today to celebrate Chinese New Year.  I let my parents know that we were going to be celebrating today.  The kids walked into the room to find these decorations that I got from Party City.

I was surprised this morning when one of my kiddos brought in a bag of things from China.  He was adopted from there when he was a baby.  So...we started the morning with him sharing his story.  It was so sweet.  I wish I would have had a video tape going.  He brought these things to share with us.  The rest of the kids were so excited and had so many questions.
 A book about China...

Money...the kids thought this was so cool!

Tiny shoes that he said he wore when he was a baby!  So adorable!   The kids wanted him to put them on.

 A fan!

After looking at all the items we listened to a song on our Smart Board!  The kids LOVED this.  We listened to it a few times throughout the day.  They will probably be singing it in their sleep.

You can find the words and the song from Diary of a First Grade Teacher's Blog by clicking here...Chinese New Year song and words.

We did some literacy activities that you can find on my Chinese New Year pack here...Chinese-New-Year-Math-and-Literacy-Centers

We sorted sentences.  We decided if they were telling sentences, asking sentences or excited sentences.

We looked at words and sorted them according to common nouns and proper nouns.

We read sentences and put the correct end mark on them.  I love using my doc camera and using my Smart Board so that everyone can see.

Cutting out nouns and gluing them into the correct boxes.  They had to decide if the words were common nouns or proper nouns.

We ended the day by making Chinese New Year Lanterns.  We will put them together tomorrow when the glitter dries.

When they finished these, they colored some coloring sheets with the Chinese New Year animals.  They colored a snake and all of the animals to go with the Zodiac signs.

You can find the coloring sheets by visiting Tori's Teacher  You can find tons of free worksheets for the Chinese New Year.

It was a great day!
